LPO Alsace has a double mission: the protection and conservation of birds and the habitats on which they depend, and public awareness-raising. Its headquarters is in Strasbourg.

Alsacian landscape - photo Jean-Marc BronnerWith nearly 2000 members and 10 employees (as at 1 January 2006), the League for the Protection of Birds – Alsace Delegation, known as “LPO Alsace”, is an association governed by the Law of 1924. It was created in March 1995 by the merging of the three most important ornithological associations in Alsace : Haut-Rhin League for the Protection of Birds (1957) then LAPO (Alsace League for the Protection of Birds, 1985), CEOA (Alsace Ornithological Study Centre, 1972) and FIR-Alsace (Raptor Foundation – Alsace, 1977).

Since this date it has been a Delegation of LPO France which is attached to the worldwide organisation BirdLife International

. However, LPO Alsace has its own statutes which give it much autonomy and it has kept its status of “public utility”, granted in 1987.

LPO Alsace is a member of ARIENA and a federate member of Alsace Nature, itself federated to France Nature Environnement.

Volunteers with varied interests are involved in thematic groups (scientific group, care centre, Kembs ornithological station…), “département” and local groups (Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Saint-Amarin group, Nambsheim youth group).

Protection

LPO Alsace:

is a member of numerous official committees dealing with the management of fauna and the environment (hunting, gravel-pits, specific sites…). The LPO has thus obtained the protection of many areas in Alsace and has contributed to the limitation of species for hunting, etc;
participates in the management committees of protected natural areas totalling several thousand hectares in the region;
is the ornithological reference for the Alsace Natural Areas Conservatory (Conservatoire des Sites Alsaciens ) and for Alsace Nature;
is involved in the designation of Special Protection Areas (SPA) under the European Birds Directive and in the drawing-up of fundamental documents;
works for the protection of natural habitats in Alsace, thanks to the LPO refuges (more than 380 hectares) and a partnership with the Alsace Natural Areas Conservatory;
owns land of high ornithological and botanical interest;
ensures the protection and monitoring of threatened species;
welcomes almost 500 birds a year in its Care Centre at Pfettisheim, thanks to the work of volunteers;
takes legal action concerning destruction of protected species.

Its network of voluntary observers (scientific group) participates in regional and national ornithological surveys aimed at monitoring the status of certain species and sites.

LPO Alsace carries out continuous inventory work and manages a rich database of more than 200 000 ornithological references, giving it unique knowledge on the status of regional avifauna.

As concrete expression of its work, it offers:

Activities

LPO Alsace :

organises activities in schools to raise environmental awareness among schoolchildren. More than 5 500 children benefit each year from these activities;
participates in the activity “Environment protection – count me in!” (Protéger l’environnement, j’adhère !), which has had unfailing success since its creation in 1997;
organises training and awareness-raising sessions for the managers of natural areas (municipal green areas services, quarrying firms);
organises guided excursions for the general public to learn more about birds and their habitats;
organises information stands at various events throughout the year;
organises convivial events every year for its members and the general public.

Communication

Information on LPO Alsace is given to its members by means of its quarterly bulletin, “LPO Infos”, by meetings and informal gatherings.

The LPO Alsace participates in “Citoyen Nature “, the regional inter-associative magazine published under the aegis of Alsace Nature, and in “Oiseau Magazine”, the national magazine published by LPO France.

LPO Alsace regularly publishes ornithological news in the media.

Die LPO Alsace hat eine doppelte Aufgabe der Schutz, die Erhaltung der Vögel und der Umwelt, die sie benötigen und die Information des Publikums. Ihr Standort ist in Strasbourg.

Die „Liga für den Vogelschutz – Verband Elsass, gewöhnlich „LPO Alsace“ genannt, ist ein eingetragener Verein gemäss Gesetz von 1924. Sie wurde im März 1995 mit dem Zusammenschluss von den 3 wichtigsten ornitologischen Vereine im Elsass : die Haut-Rhin Liga zum Schutz der Vögel (1957) dann LAPO (Ligue d’Alsace pour la Protection des Oiseaux – Elsässische Liga zum Schutz der Vögel, 1985), der CEOA (Centre d’Etudes Ornithologiques d’Alsace – Elsässisches ornithologisches Studiumszentrum, 1972) un des FIR (Fonds d’Intervention pour les Rapaces Délégation Alsace – Interventionsfonds für Raubvögel, Delegation Elsass, 1977)

Zweigstelle der LPO France seit diesem Zeitpunkt, ist die LPO Elsass über LPO France in die Weltorganisation BirdLife International eingegliedert, LPO Elsass hat eigene Statuten und genießt eine sehr große Autonomie. Sie behält auch Ihre Anerkennung als Gemeinnütziger Verein, die sie 1987 erhielt.

LPO Elsass ist Mitgleid der ARIENA und mit Alsace Nature (Elsass Natur) vereinigt, diese ist mit France Nature Environnemen t (Nationalverband für Natur und Umwelt in Frankreich) verbündet.

Die freiwilligen Helfer verteilen sich in thematische Gruppen (Wissenschaftliche Gruppe, Pflegezentrum, Ornithologische Station in Kembs…), Kreisvereine (Gruppe Bas-Rhin und Haut-Rhin) oder lokale Gruppen (St Amarin, Jugengruppe Nambsheim).

Die Beschäftigten

Schutz

Die LPO :

ist Mitglied von vielen offiziellen Komitees, welche sich um den Schutz der Tiere und ihrer Biotopen
kümmern (Jagd, Kiesgruben, …). Die LPO hat beispielsweise der Einschränkung der jagdbaren Arten beigetragen.
setzt sich für den Schutz der Naturgebiete ein, (mehrere tausend ha in der Region)
ist der ornithologische Referent für das Elsässische Konservatorium für Landschaftsschutz und für Alsace Nature.
beteiligt sich an der Bestimmung der Speziell geschützten Gebieten nach den europäischen Bestimmungen für Vogelschutz, und an der Erarbeitung der Ziele,
beteiligt sich am Schutz der natürlichen Gebieten im Elsass, dank der „Refuges LPO – Zufluchtstätten die LPO“ (mehr als 380 ha) und ist Partner des Konservatoriums der Elsässischen Gebiete.
ist Eigentümer von Grundstücken, die einen Ornithologischen und Botanischen Wert haben.
übernimmt den Schutz und die Überwachung von Aussterben bedrohte Arten.
Pflegt bis zu 500 Vögel im Jahr in seinem Pflegezentrum von Pfettisheim auf, dies dank der Arbeit der freiwilligen Helfern.
unternimmt gerichtliche Schritte indem sie Zivilpartei ergreift, wenn es sich um Vernichtung von geschützten Tierarten handelt.

Sein Netz von freiwilligen Beobachtern (wissenschaftliche Gruppe) beteiligt sich an den regionalen und nationalen ornithologischen Ermittlungen, zur Besserung des Kenntnis des Standes einiger Arten und Gebieten. Die LPO Elsass führt eine konstante Inventur durch und verwaltet eine Datenbank die bis zu 200000 ornithologischen Angaben enthält, Diese Daten ermöglichen eine einzigartigen Kenntnisstand der Vogelfauna der Region.

Um Ihre Arbeit zu veranschaulichen, bietet sie ein jährliches Kolloquium, Fachzeitschriften, Bücher, Dokumente, Aushängetafeln an.

Veranstaltungen

Die LPO

bietet Veranstaltungen für die Schulen um den Schülern den Naturschutz näher zu bringen. Mehr als 500 Schüler beteiligen sich jährlich an solchen Veranstaltungen.
beteiligt sich an der Aktion „L’environnement, j’adhère“ (Umweltschutz, ich mache mit) dessen Erfolg seit der Gründung 1997 nicht nachlässt.
veranstaltet Sensibilisierungstagungen für die Verwalter von Naturschutzgebieten (Grünflächenverwalter von Gemeinden, von Kiessaubbaugebieten)
organisiert Ausflüge und Führungen für das Publikum zum Kennen lernen von Vögeln und deren Unterschlüpfe.
stellt Informationsstände auf, bei öffentlichen Veranstaltungen, das ganze Jahr hindurch.
organisiert jedes Jahr Feste für seine Mitglieder und die Bevölkerung.

Kommunikation

Die Informationen der LPO werden den Mitgliedern, anhand vierteljähriger Berichte zugesandt :
„LPO Infos“, in Treffen und Besprechungen.
Die LPO Elsass beteiligt sich an der regionalen Zeitschrift von Alsace Nature “Citoyen Nature„ und an dem „Oiseau Magazine – Vogelszeitschrift“ (herausgegeben von LPO Alsace und LPO France).
Die LPO Elsass gibt regelmäßig die Ornithologischen Neuigkeiten in den Medien bekannt.
